Heating Systems Within a Greenhouse Service-Packing Areas and Corridors

When it comes to greenhouse service and packing areas and corridors, heating is a matter of acceptable comfort for people, melting the snow on the greenhouse roof and maintaining certain level of thermal buffer between the growing area and the space outside the greenhouse.

Temperatures inside these areas are not as high as in the growing areas and they are a matter of users preference. Can be between 15 °C (59 °F) and as low as 5 °C (41 °F) in some cases.

Most of the time heating is composed out of a single system, usually upper heating with 8, 12 or 16 pipes hanging under the trelly, depending on the size of the trelly. Eight meter trelly is rarely used in the working areas because this way too many inside posts are introduced. So most of the time we have a 12m trelly or a 16m trelly in the working areas, which means 12 or 16 pipes per trelly.

Heating system is independent. It has its own pump, mixing valves and other control elements.

Another way of heating the Working area is with a floor heating system. Floor heating system is constructed by means of flexible rubber or aluminum pipes, positioned inside the floor concrete. This is done during the construction of the floor. The pipes are positioned in a spiral like shape, on the steel armature and then a wet concrete is poured on top of them. There is a small distributor where all these floor pipes are connected to. The water temperature is low. It runs in the range of 40-45 °C  (104-113 °F) because it is not so good for people to walk on a very warm concrete. It’s not good and it’s not necessary either.

Usually greenhouse owners choose one or the other heating system, but some choose both. That’s a matter of preference.

Corridors and narrow pathways… Sometimes they have their own heating systems, independent. But most of the time, the upper heating system pipes of the adjacent growing or working area are extended to cover the corridor, so same heating is available in these areas.
